Anthropic's personal agent
Duet keeps running around the clock on its own computer in the cloud, even when phone and laptop are off. You hand it tasks by message; it takes care of inbox, calendar, follow-ups and open invoices and reports each morning what needs your attention.

What is already happening in the US is coming to Europe soon.
AI assistants shop, call and book. In the US this is already running, Europe is following. Here it is in plain words: what it means for your business.
What does an agent cost?
The key question. There are no prices for Europe yet, but in the US they are already visible:
Gemini SparkGoogle’s 24/7 agent, in the AI Pro plan$20a month
ChatGPT Pro with Dotsalways-on agent with its own cloud computer, since 29 Sep 2026from $100a month
ChatGPT Business PremiumDots for companies, per seat, minimum 2 seats, billed annually$100a month
Google AI UltraSpark with more capacityfrom $100a month
Perplexity Maxwith the Comet agent browser$200a month
Already usable in Europe
Mistral Vibefrom France, agent with Work modePro $14.99
ClaudeAnthropic, works with your files and appsPro from $20
ChatGPT Business PremiumDots for companies, from 2 seats$100 per seat
Still blocked: Gemini Spark · ChatGPT Dots on Pro · Meta Muse (US and Canada only) · Claude Duet (US only, waitlist)
Gemini Spark and ChatGPT Dots on the Pro plan are still blocked in the EU, the UK and Switzerland. Only ChatGPT Business Premium gives companies here access to Dots.
For your customers an agent costs 20 to 200 dollars a month in the US today. For you as a business, being found by it costs nothing, as long as your data is right.
US list prices, October 2026. The old agent mode in ChatGPT Plus has been discontinued since August 2026.
AI goes shopping
In the USGoogle, Amazon, Visa, Mastercard and PayPal have launched shopping by AI assistant. Purchases are still few, but growing fast.
Here in EuropeSince summer 2026 the first real agent payments run with European banks. Big shops have no checkout for agents yet.
What to do nowPut prices, delivery times and availability on your own site, clear and machine-readable.
AI makes the call
In the USSince September 2026 Google’s assistant calls restaurants, hair salons and DIY stores for its users and asks about prices and free slots.
Here in EuropeNot yet switched on in the EU, the UK or Switzerland. New Google features usually arrive here later.
What to do nowKeep your Google Business Profile up to date: hours, phone, services. It also lets you choose whether automated calls are allowed.
AI books tables and trips
In the USPersonal assistants reserve tables, book trips and compare offers. Mistakes still happen and some platforms block them.
Here in EuropeOne thing counts above all: if you can be booked online, an assistant can book you.
What to do nowOffer online booking with fixed times and confirm every booking by email.
AI visitors buy more often
In the USAccording to Adobe, visitors who come from an AI assistant buy about 31 percent more often than others.
Here in EuropeTheir share is still small, but these visitors already know what they want.
What to do nowA site that answers questions directly: what it costs, when it is possible, how to reach you.
Platforms close the door
In the USAmazon blocks outside assistants and is suing one of them. The big platforms decide who may shop there.
Here in EuropeIf you only sell through platforms, you depend on their rules.
What to do nowBuild your own website as your own door, with your own data and your own contact.
The rules are coming
In the USIn the US the big companies set the pace.
Here in EuropeTransparency duties of the EU AI Act apply since August 2026. The EU digital wallet arrives at the end of 2026. By August 2027 Android must allow outside assistants.
What to do nowPrepare now, not in 2027. Whoever is early gets found early.
Europe is waiting: as of October 2026
The EU does not ban these agents, and there is no approval they are waiting for. Nobody files an application that Brussels would have to grant. The providers themselves do not release the consumer versions and give neither a reason nor a date for Germany.
What is Google Gemini Spark?
Spark is Google's personal agent. It keeps running around the clock in Google's data centre, even when your phone and laptop are off. You give it a task, and it does the work itself in Gmail, Calendar, Docs and the Chrome browser, using the passwords saved there if you allow it. It asks before payments and other important steps. Spark comes with a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, not with free Gemini.
Where Spark is availableIn more than 160 countries, wherever the Gemini app runs, with a few exceptions. Launched in the US on 19 May 2026 and rolled out worldwide since late July 2026. This includes, for example, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, South Korea and Hong Kong, plus most countries in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
Unfortunately not here yet
All 27 EU countries, plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein (together the European Economic Area), Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Outside Europe only Nigeria is missing. This applies even with the most expensive plan.
Why not in Europe? Google gives neither a reason nor a date. Reports attribute it to reviewing European rules: an agent that permanently uses mailbox, calendar and passwords in the background has to comply with the GDPR. Since 2 August 2026 the AI Act requires transparency, and the Digital Markets Act obliges Google to give competitors comparable access. Switzerland and the UK have similar data protection laws and are usually treated the same way. There is no ban. Google is holding back the consumer version itself.
What Spark means for retail: In the US, Google announced Universal Cart in May 2026 and launched it on 15 October 2026, a shared shopping cart across many shops in Google Search and the Gemini app, later also YouTube and Gmail. Gemini tracks prices there, reports when something is back in stock and warns when parts do not fit together. Payment runs through UCP, either directly with Google or on the merchant's site. With AP2 an agent may buy on its own within limits set in advance, for example up to a maximum price. Merchants decide for themselves how far they let agents in. None of this is available in Europe yet: Google names Canada, Australia and the UK as the next countries for Universal Cart, not the EU.
Google Gemini SparkAn agent that handles tasks in other apps around the clock. Introduced on 19 May 2026, extended to many more countries in July (more than 160 according to Google), not in the EEA (European Economic Area: the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Nigeria.
OpenAI DotsAlways-on agents, introduced on 29 September 2026. Not on ChatGPT Pro in the EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Business Premium runs in all ChatGPT countries, including Germany, Enterprise as soon as an admin switches it on. Business customers first, consumers later.
Meta MuseIn a limited test phase: USA since 8 September, Canada since 18 September 2026. No European country, no date.
Claude DuetAnthropic's personal agent, introduced on 21 October 2026. Research preview with waitlist, Pro and Max in the US only. No European country, no date.
Shopping via assistantGoogle's UCP and AP2 run for consumers in the USA, and since 15 October so does Universal Cart. Canada and Australia are announced (as of 17 October 2026).
So it is not a ban but a staged rollout: business customers first, consumers later or not at all.

Why Europe is treated differently
There is no regulatory approval as for a medicine. Companies must show themselves that their product meets the rules, and hold it back while the risk seems too high to them. Agents like Spark access accounts, saved passwords and the browser with permission, and can trigger bookings. That touches four sets of rules at once:
GDPRLegal basis, purpose limitation, access and deletion as soon as an agent reads mailboxes, calendars or payment data. An agent running permanently in the background is harder to justify than a chat you open yourself. Data often flows to US servers. Meta has published nothing so far on data processing agreements or EU data residency for Muse.
AI ActSince 2 August 2026, transparency is mandatory: people must be able to tell they are dealing with AI. The strict high-risk obligations follow on 2 December 2027. An assistant falls under them once it decides on jobs, credit or access to services.
Digital Services ActSets duties for large platforms and search engines: handling illegal content, transparency, risk assessment. How far this applies to AI agents is not yet settled.
Digital Markets ActLarge platforms must give rivals comparable access. Google must enable comparable functions for rival Android assistants by July 2027. The European Commission decided this in July 2026. Press reports suspect: what Google does not offer in Europe at all, it does not have to open up for rivals either. Google itself does not say so.
Our reading, not their stated reason: It is plausible that the providers hold back consumer products until logging, human approval before payments and emails, AI notices and data flows to the US are documented. The UK and Switzerland often follow because their privacy rules are similar. Earlier cases went similarly: Apple delayed Apple Intelligence in the EU and at least named the DMA. Meta held back AI features over the GDPR. Google and OpenAI leave the reason open.
When it arrives in Germany: There is no date. Estimates of late 2026 for Spark are not confirmed by Google. OpenAI only excludes Dots on Pro in the EEA "at launch", without a date; Meta says nothing. Already available: ChatGPT Work, Claude on paid plans, Copilot Cowork in companies and Dots via Business Premium.
What it means for websites: Sites that prepare now will be ready on day one when the agents launch here.

Both are always-on personal agents, not ordinary chats. The difference: what they are tied to and how far they may act on their own.
Gemini Spark Google · introduced 19 May 2026
Runs on Gemini 3.5 in Google's cloud, even when laptop and phone are off. Tied to Gmail, Docs, Calendar, Sheets and Chrome. With permission it uses saved logins to start things like flight bookings or viewings. Paying and sending emails require approval. Third parties such as Canva join via connected apps, including via MCP.
Dots OpenAI · since 29 September 2026
More like a permanent colleague: each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser, works across more than 4,000 apps and starts tasks for code, documents and analysis. Reachable in ChatGPT, by phone call, in Slack and Teams. Read-only in the background. Its own rules define what it may do alone, when it asks and what is off limits.

Agents at a glance
Today AI agents mostly do work: texts, research, spreadsheets, code. The next big step are personal agents that act on behalf of a person, with their accounts and their money. They book a flight, put together a trip or buy the running shoes as soon as the price is right.
An agent is not just an agent: helper agent and active agent
The word "agent" stands for two very different things today. Mix them up and you either believe agents are already everywhere, or that they are pure science fiction. Neither is true.
Helper agent
A tool inside the chat. You give an AI assistant a big task, and it sends several helper agents off in the background at the same time: one researches, one calculates, one writes. Once they are done, they are gone. They do not know you, have no money and buy nothing. This is everyday reality, in Germany too.
Active agent
A representative who is there for you, around the clock. It knows you, your accounts and preferences, has a budget and acts in your name: searches, compares, books and pays, even while you sleep. This is what shopping by agent is about. In Germany it is not yet available to consumers.

Rule of thumb: Helper agents do work. Active agents do the shopping. We use the first kind every day; the second is arriving now, first in the US.
"Claude can already do that!" Is that true?
Half. Picture two helpers. One is a hard-working intern: does everything you ask, but only when you ask. The other is a personal assistant: sits in the office all day, sees what comes in and calls you when something matters. Claude Cowork is the intern today. Claude Duet is meant to be the assistant.

So where is the MCP door here?
Exactly at steps 2 and 3. The MCP door is where the buying agent knocks at the shop. Without a door it can only read the shop window and guess. With a door it queries stock, size, price and offer directly and gets a binding answer. The other steps have their own protocols: one for agents talking to each other (A2A), one for cart and checkout (Google's UCP, or ACP from OpenAI and Stripe) and one for the payment mandate (AP2). A shop without a door is at a disadvantage: the agent has to guess and, when in doubt, picks a shop that answers directly.
Machine to machine: The building blocks exist already. Via the open A2A protocol (Agent2Agent, introduced by Google in 2025, now at the Linux Foundation) agents talk to each other. AP2 ensures an agent may only pay within a limit set in advance. Selling agents that haggle with buying agents exist only in trials so far.
Can I let an agent buy my shoes in Germany today?
No.Not yet.
In the USA a personal agent already books and pays today. In Germany the agent that is allowed to buy is missing, and payment by agent is only in a pilot with banks.

◐ announced, not yet launched. Germany: first agent payments in a pilot with banks, not yet released for consumer agents. As of 17 October 2026.
Why not yet?
1
The providers do not release them
Google, Meta and OpenAI do not launch their consumer agents here. There is no ban and no approval they are waiting for. They hold the products back themselves and give no reason.
2
Strict rules, heavy burden of proof
An agent with account, password and money touches the GDPR, the AI Act, the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act at once. Every data flow and every approval before payment must be documented before a provider takes the risk.
3
Payment by agent only in a pilot
Visa and Mastercard made the first real agent payments with European banks in June and July 2026, including Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank and N26. For consumer agents this is not yet released here. Google's UCP (checkout) and AP2 (payment mandate) run for consumers in the USA; Canada and Australia are announced. As of 17 October 2026.
When? No provider gives a date. It will come anyway, and then what counts is which shops an agent can understand and query.
Self-hosted: technically usable, not a vetted product
These runtimes get far-reaching rights over computer, mail and messengers and are vulnerable to smuggled-in commands (prompt injection). Something for tech-savvy users, not a replacement for a vetted consumer product.

The outlook: the agent buys on its own
An agent only becomes a real agent when it negotiates the price itself, no human stands in between and it completes the task all the way to the order.
"Order me the blue shoes as soon as the price drops below 120 euros."
From then on nobody shops with their eyes. Searching, comparing, negotiating and ordering happen in the background, machine to machine. The human only sees the shipping confirmation.
